JULIAN MAGUIRE - PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER
Julian Bernard Maguire was born in St Martins Guernsey in 1857 and is believed to have died in 1935.
The first Census record the author has found for Julian Maguire is from 1891 where he is listed as being a 'Photographer' and living at New Town Building, 1, St David Place, St Helier, Jersey, with his wife Rosa De P also born in St Martins, Guernsey. They have six children at this time, three born in St Martins Guernsey (1878 - 1881) and three born in St Helier, Jersey (1885 - 1889). From these dates, it can be deduced that they came to Jersey between 1881 and 1885. It is more than likely that it is the earlier date as the Jersey 'Electric Light Studio' is understood to have been in operation from 1881 to 1899.
The second Census record found is from 1911 -Crowborough England, where he is based with his wife and one daughter aged 22 (born 1889 in Jersey) who is a 'School Principal' who teaches at home, strangely she does not appear on the 1891 Census and is born in the same year as Lawrence. Julian's occupation is shown as being a 'Painter (Artist). It is more than likely Julian is the JP Maguire who painted Jersey, Guernsey Court Officials and possibly Alderney as well? This man is listed as dying in 1935).
In the same 1911 Census, Julian and Rosa are listed as having 9 children born and 8 still living.
Two further census entries can be found for one of his sons (1901 & 1911), where he is based in the UK.
The Carte De Visites and Cabinet images shown in this photo gallery show only the Guernsey Studio variants. There are also two late cdv backs showing 'MAGUIRE BROS', which may possibly point to Julian having a brother to help run the Guernsey operation while he was in Jersey (his sons would be too young).
The author would be grateful if information could be given about the Jersey studio for a Jersey photo gallery and any other information.
