S HYAMS - PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER
Solomon Hyams, aged 29 and born in 1852 is shown in the 1881 Census as being born in Hastings Sussex and living at the 'Charotterie Road St Peter Port'. This is the same address as the one his cdv back stamp. In other words, he is working from home. His Occupation is shown as being a 'Photographer & Naval Pensioner'.

He is living with his wife, Margaret and three children - all born in Portsmouth.

Nothing can be found by the author for the 1891 Census, but in the 1901 Census,his wife Margaret is shown as being Head of the family and living in Brighton and being widowed. Two of her children are now not living at home, but three extra children are present, one born in Guernsey in1882, the other in Guernsey in 1884 and one born in 1886 in Portsmouth. It therefore is likely that the family moved back to the UK between 1884 and 1886.

In the 1911 Census. Solomon's wife is still living in Brighton with some of her family plus a Daughter In Law and Grandchild. The Census states she was 39 years married.
