The image can be dated reasonably well due to the schooner 'Mellona' being wrecked in 1885 and the Lifeboat station on the Castle Cornet emplacement already in situ ((constructed 1881) .

'Mellona' was built in 1840 in Guernsey by Thomas de la Mare at South Beach. In November 1885 she was stranded on Margate Sands - no crew were lost. She was lifted off the sands and towed for London the next day, but this time got stuck on the Goodwin Sands and then was abandoned.
