St Peter Port 1357 CN photo
St Peter Port 1357 CN photo

The original photograph is 11.5" x 9.5" (295mm x 240mm) and shows St Peter Port Harbour in about 1883.

The image can be dated reasonably well due to the schooner 'Mellona' on the left being wrecked in 1885 and the Lifeboat station on the Castle Cornet emplacement already in situ ((constructed 1881) .

'Mellona' was built in 1840 in Guernsey by Thomas de la Mare at South Beach. In November 1885 she was stranded on Margate Sands - no crew were lost. She was lifted off the sands and towed for London the next day, but this time got stuck on the Goodwin Sands and then was abandoned.
