Saumarez Memorial  - Swedish Visit

This image was taken on the 22nd May 1910. According to 'Guernsey Through the Lens'he Lens' - see plate 133 which has a similar image. 'The Swedish Government sent two warships to Guernsey, under Count G.A. Wachmeister, commanding Officer of the cruiser Fylgia, who placed a wreath at the memorial'.

The person standing to his right in the top hat could be the Lieutenant Governor, General Auld.

A certified photo of General Auld in 1908 is shown also in this gallery plus an image from this photograph of the man in the top hat - if is it the same person as he appears much older,

The 99 foot granite Memorial and was unveiled on 1 August 1878, which was exactly 80 years since the Battle of the Nile where Admiral Saumarez had been second in command.


The photograph was taken by Woodwards who were known to be operating in Guernsey in the circa 1910 era.
