Les Touillets Observation Tower -2
Les Touillets Observation Tower -2

Les Touillets tower was demolished in 1975 and eventually replaced by the television mast we see today.

The author was previously led to believe the lower part of the tower was built pre WW2 and was used as a training tower by the Fire Brigade and the Germans subsequently heightened and modified it, but no proof can be found for this.

Current evidence shows it to have been built in 1942 by the Germans during the occupation as an observation point - it was the highest view point in the island. RAF reconnaissance aerial photos show it was not there in 1940 but was there in 1942.

Pre demolition, Mike Deane took a photograph of the tower and also took two images from the top as shown here and in the next photo.
