This image of La Varde was photographed in 1899 and at the time it was known as 'The Druid's Altar'

The largest megalithic structure in Guernsey was discovered by chance in 1811 by soldiers.

F.C. Lukis did a thorough excavation of the site in 1837 and found many artifacts including skeletal remains.

Originally there were seven capstones and in 1898 the largest capstone was stabilised with an additional granite support..
