The following photos are shown by permission of Valerie Sarre the grandaughter of Herbert William Shepherd of the Royal Guernsey Militia and subsequently the Royal Guernsey Light Infantry.

The following information has been given.

Herbert William Shepherd was born 20th oct 1887. In the 1891 census he was living at 8 Le Pollet in St Peter Port with his parents and six siblings.

In the 1901 census they had moved to 18 Le Bordage. Herbert aged 13 was an errand boy port (sic)( maybe a porter at the harbour).

Herbert aged 23 married Susannah Mary Roberts on the 18th December 1910 at the parish church of St Martin.

He had joined the Royal Guernsey Militia on the 2/6/1908 - reg no 1551. He was then with the RGLI from the 20/1/1917 and then discharged as physically unfit for service on 29/1 1918. It was found out later that he had T.B., so maybe that was the reason he was discharged.

Herbert never saw service on the continent but was awarded the silver war badge on 1/2/1918.

Herbert died young aged 42 on the 19/3/1929 -- the family were living at 110 Victoria Road St Peter Port at that time.

Herbert's son, Verdun Charles Harold was born on the 11/3/1917 and the photo that shows Verdun as a baby is the one shown with Herbert and his wife.
