St James's Street in the 1890's
St James's Street in the 1890's

This street is completely different now. The main building on the left is dated 1888 and has 'Burgess Brothers' upholsterers on the first floor; they also occupy the next door building.

On the ground floor of the 1888 building the office of Wilfred M. Mauger 'Debt Collector' is situated.
The original Police Station was also in this building (demolished in 1955 and the site later occupied by H. M. Crown Officers in St James's Chambers).

The next building up the street is 'Burgess Brothers' again, with the following building being 'H. Grut' ; Builder Painter. The next building has a sign which is indistinct, but could be 'B. Martel'.

There is a similar photo taken from the same spot and time in Carel Toms' book ' Guernsey Through The Lens' - Plate 78. However Carel's description is a bit strange as he mentions the photo as being taken in about 1850 which is clearly a typo.
