Prince Albert Statue and Surrounding Area before 1874

This wonderful image which was taken in the late 1860's or early 1870's shows the area around the Prince Albert Memorial Statue prior to 1874.

The 1874 date is precise as that was the year that the old house at the bottom of Fountain street was demolished and the new Lower Vegetable Market building was started to be built - it was completed in 1879.

An enlargement of the the old house can be seen in the next photograph.
