M.V. Prosperity & Elwood Mead

On the 17th January 1974 the M.V. Prosperity, 2085 tons, due to violent storms ran aground on Guernsey- she carried 3,800,000 cubic metres of timber.

The ship's bow section broke away from the rest of the hull and this can be seen on the right. Eighteen lives were lost, with six persons of Pakistani origin being buried at Le Foulon Cemetery. Full Muslim rites were carried out.

The Elwood Mead also ran aground nearby on Christmas morning of 1973 can also be seen in the background of this image. This ship was luckier as she was pulled free and repaired in Holland.
